Witold Gombrowicz

Witold Gombrowicz (1904–1969) was a Polish writer. Born in Małoszyce, he studied law in Warsaw after finishing school. From 1928/29 to 1934 he worked at a court in Warsaw before devoting himself entirely to literature. In 1933 he published the story collection »Memoirs from a Time of Immaturity«. His novel »Ferdydurke« appeared in the late 1930s and sparked a vigorous literary debate. In 1939, Gombrowicz was in Buenos Aires when the outbreak of the Second World War caught him by surprise during a journey; he subsequently remained in Argentina for 24 years. A large part of his work was written there.
