Prof. Dr. Werner Jank studied music education, history and pedagogy in Vienna and Oldenburg, receiving his doctorate in history in 1982. After working as a schoolteacher in Vienna, Wilhelmshaven and Heidelberg and serving as a lecturer at the universities of Oldenburg, Hamburg and Giessen, he was appointed professor of music education at the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Mannheim in 1993. In 2009, he became professor of music education and head of the school-music degree programs at the Frankfurt University of Music and the Performing Arts. His publications focus particularly on general and subject-specific didactic models, teaching methods and the history of music didactics. He was a longtime board member of the Bundesfachgruppe Musikpädagogik and served as chair of the International Society for the Philosophy of Music Education in 2015–16.
