Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian painter, graphic artist, educator, and writer. After studying economics and abandoning a doctoral degree, he decided at the age of 30 to study art in Munich. Together with Franz Marc, he founded the artists’ group Der Blaue Reiter in 1911. From 1922 to 1933, Kandinsky taught at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau. As a painter and graphic artist, he is regarded as one of the pioneers of abstract art.
