Warsan Shire

Warsan Shire (born 1988 in Kenya) is a Somali-British author and poet. She moved to London with her parents as a toddler and began attending poetry workshops at the age of 15. In 2011, she published the poetry chapbook »Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth«. In 2013, she became the first Young Poet Laureate for London and received the African Poetry Prize from Brunel University. Her poems also gained international attention through their circulation online. In 2017, Beyoncé recited verses by Shire between the songs in her film »Lemonade«. Shire’s poetry collection »Bless the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head« was published in 2022.
