Walter Tevis

Walter Tevis (1928–1984) was an American writer. After serving in the Pacific during the Second World War, he studied literature at the University of Kentucky. He then worked for many years as a teacher and university lecturer before becoming a full-time freelance writer. Several of his novels were adapted for film, including *The Hustler*, *The Color of Money*, and *The Man Who Fell to Earth*. His novel *The Queen’s Gambit* was later also successfully adapted.
