Volkhard Knigge

Volkhard Knigge, born in Bielefeld in 1954, is a historian, history educator and psychoanalyst. From 1994 to April 2020, he directed the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation. From 2008 to 2020, he held the Chair of History in Media and the Public Sphere at the Institute of History at Friedrich Schiller University Jena; he was appointed honorary professor in 2002. His distinctions include the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland (2005), the Carl von Ossietzky Prize (2006), the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (2006), the Heinz Galinski Prize (2007), and appointment as a Knight of France’s Legion of Honour (2013).
