Born in 1943, Volker Ullrich studied history, literature and philosophy and earned a doctorate in history. From 1990 to 2009, he headed the political books section at the weekly newspaper Die Zeit. His publications include The Nervous Great Power: The Rise and Fall of the German Empire, 1871–1918 (1997), the two-volume biography Adolf Hitler (2013/2018), and Eight Days in May (2020). His Hitler biography was translated into numerous languages. Ullrich received the Alfred Kerr Prize for Literary Criticism in 1992 and an honorary doctorate from Friedrich Schiller University Jena in 2008.
