Volker Hage

Volker Hage (1949–2026), born in Hamburg, was a German journalist, literary critic, and author. He worked as a literary editor at the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Die Zeit, and, from 1992 to 2014, Der Spiegel. Hage published monographs, biographies, and works on literary theory, and edited numerous anthologies. His notable works include the first biography of Max Frisch, published in 1983, and Zeugen der Zerstörung. Die Literaten und der Luftkrieg (2003). As a novelist, he published Die freie Liebe (2015) and Des Lebens fünfter Akt (2018), a fictional biography of Arthur Schnitzler. He also held visiting professorships at universities in Germany and the United States.
