Vivian Gornick

Vivian Gornick (born 1935 in the Bronx, New York) is an American author, journalist, and literary critic. The daughter of Jewish immigrants, she began her journalistic career at the weekly newspaper The Village Voice. She published eleven nonfiction books, many with autobiographical elements, and is regarded as an important voice in the American women’s movement. Her memoir Fierce Attachments was named by The New York Times as one of the best memoirs of the previous fifty years. Approaching Eye Level was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award; for The Odd Woman and the City, Gornick received the Windham-Campbell Prize and was nominated for a PEN Award.
