Violette Leduc (1907–1972) was born in Arras. Before beginning her writing career, she worked as a secretary at a publishing house. She became known for her autobiographical work La bâtarde (1964), which featured a foreword by Simone de Beauvoir. Her writing also explored her experience of being born out of wedlock and her struggles with love and loss.
