Viktor Shklovsky (1893–1984) was a Russian writer, literary, theatre and film critic, essayist, and screenwriter. He studied philology in St. Petersburg and was a co-founder of OPOYAZ, a society devoted to the study of poetic language. He became one of the leading figures of Russian Formalism. After the Revolution, he taught at the Institute of Art History in Petrograd. During the Civil War, he served as a soldier and army commissar; in 1922 he fled to Berlin and returned to Moscow in 1923. His influential works included biographies of Sergei Eisenstein, Leo Tolstoy, and Vladimir Mayakovsky.
