Ute Frevert

Ute Frevert (born 1954) is a German historian. She taught at the Free University of Berlin and at the universities of Bielefeld and Konstanz, and was a professor at Yale University from 2003 to 2007. In 2008, she became a director at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, where she took charge of the research area “History of Emotions.” Her work covers social, cultural and political history, as well as the history of emotions and gender. Frevert received the German Research Foundation’s Leibniz Prize in 1998, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, First Class, in 2016, and the Sigmund Freud Prize for Academic Prose in 2020. Her books include The Barracked Nation, Emotions in History and The Politics of Humiliation.
