Ulrike Schweikert was born in Schwäbisch Hall in 1966 and spent her school years there. After completing an apprenticeship in banking and working as a securities trader, she studied geology in Stuttgart and journalism in Hohenheim. Her historical debut novel, The Daughter of the Salt Boiler, was published in 2000; from 2001 onward, she worked as a full-time writer. Her work includes historical novels as well as fantasy and crime fiction for adults and young readers. Among her best-known works are the young adult series The Heirs of the Night and the Charité series. The Daughter of the Salt Boiler was adapted for the stage and performed at the Schwäbisch Hall Open-Air Theatre in 2015.
