Tomi Ungerer

Tomi Ungerer (1931–2019) was an Alsatian author, illustrator, cartoonist and painter. Born in Strasbourg, he grew up in Colmar. After failing his school-leaving examination, he hitchhiked across Europe and published his first drawings in the magazine Simplicissimus. His international career began in New York. His best-known picture books include The Three Robbers and The Moon Man, both regarded as modern classics. Ungerer received the Hans Christian Andersen Award, and a museum dedicated to his work was established in Strasbourg.
