Tom Rob Smith was born in London in 1979 to a Swedish mother and an English father. He studied at Cambridge and in Italy before working as a screenwriter. His debut novel, “Child 44,” a thriller set in the Stalin era and based on the case of serial killer Andrei Chikatilo, became an international bestseller. It won, among other distinctions, the Steel Dagger and was nominated for the Man Booker Prize. Smith continued the story of intelligence officer Leo Demidov with “Kolyma” and “Agent 6,” completing a trilogy; “Child 44” has been translated into around thirty languages.
