Tim Anderson was born and raised in Wisconsin. He studied the history of Japanese cuisine at a university in Los Angeles and then spent two years in Japan. In 2011, he won the British cooking competition MasterChef, gaining recognition for his Japanese-inspired cuisine. He wrote several cookbooks about Japanese food and founded the Japanese soul-food restaurant Nanban in London. He has attributed his interest in Japanese cuisine to the cooking programme Iron Chef, which he watched as a teenager.
