Thor Heyerdahl (1914–2002) was a Norwegian explorer and author. He studied zoology, geography and Pacific ethnography and undertook numerous research expeditions. He gained international recognition in 1947 through the Kon-Tiki expedition, during which he crossed the Pacific on a balsa-wood raft. Heyerdahl published numerous books, many of which became international bestsellers.
