Thomas Nagel, born in 1937 in Belgrade, is an American philosopher and legal scholar. He moved to the United States in 1939 and grew up in New York. After studying at Cornell University, Oxford, and Harvard, he taught at institutions including Berkeley, Princeton, and New York University, where he served as a professor of philosophy and law. His best-known works include the essay collection “Mortal Questions” and the essay “What Is It Like to Be a Bat?”, which it contains. In 2008, he received the Rolf Schock Prize in Philosophy and the Balzan Prize. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy.
