Tennessee Williams, born Thomas Lanier Williams III on March 26, 1911, in Columbus, Mississippi, was an American writer and one of the major dramatists of the 20th century. After studying journalism and theater, he initially worked in a shoe factory before studying playwriting. His breakthrough came with the play The Glass Menagerie. He achieved international recognition with A Streetcar Named Desire, which won the Pulitzer Prize. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof also received the Pulitzer Prize. Williams died in New York City on February 25, 1983.
