Tassilo Wengel was born in Zwickau in 1943. After training as a gardener, he studied at Humboldt University of Berlin, graduating with a degree in horticultural engineering. From 1979/1980 onward, he worked as a freelance writer and photojournalist for book and magazine publishers. He published hiking and cycling guides as well as books on nature and herbs. His particular interests included plants, hiking and travel, cultural history, and garden art.
