Tahir Hamut Izgil, born in 1969 in Xinjiang in western China, is a Uyghur poet, filmmaker, and political activist. He is regarded as one of the most internationally prominent modern poets writing in the Uyghur language. In the mid-1990s, he spent three years in a Chinese reeducation camp after being accused of attempting to take sensitive data out of the country. In 2017, he fled into exile with his family.
