Susanne Foitzik was an evolutionary biologist and behavioral researcher. She began studying the behavior and evolution of ants during her doctoral research. After research stays in the United States, she initially taught at LMU Munich and later held a chair at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Her research focused on the coevolution of slave-making ants and their hosts, the manipulation of behavior by parasites, and the evolution of aging and division of labor in social insect colonies. Her findings were published in more than 100 scientific papers.
