Suleman Taufiq was born in Beirut in 1953 to Syrian parents and grew up in Damascus. In 1971, he moved to Germany to study philosophy and comparative literature. He published poetry, novels, short stories, essays, and books for children, and worked as a writer for radio and television. He also translated Arabic literature into German and German poets into Arabic. His first collection of poetry in German appeared in 1978. In 1983, Taufiq received the Literature Prize of the City of Aachen. In 2015, he was nominated for the European CIVIS Radio Award and received the media award of the German Professional Association of Paediatricians in the radio category.
