Sue Townsend (1946–2014) was an English writer born in Leicester. She left school at the age of 15 and initially supported herself through various jobs. In 1978, she began writing plays. She became best known for her novels and diaries about the teenager Adrian Mole. Her work often addressed the British monarchy and English class society in a satirical way. Townsend became blind in 2001 as a result of diabetes but continued writing. She died in 2014 following a stroke.
