Stevie Smith (1902–1971), whose real name was Florence Margaret Smith, grew up in London and initially worked as a private secretary to two magazine publishers. She published her debut novel, “Novel on Yellow Paper”, in 1936. Her other novels include “Over the Frontier” and “The Holiday”; she also published several volumes of poetry. She received the Cholmondeley Award for Poetry and, in 1969, the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry.
