Stendhal, whose real name was Henri Beyle (1783–1842), was a French writer. He initially served in the Napoleonic military administration and took part in several campaigns. After Napoleon’s fall, he lived in Italy for several years and later served as French consul in Civita Vecchia. His work includes novels, travel writing, and studies of art and music. His best-known works include *The Red and the Black*, *The Charterhouse of Parma*, and the essay *On Love*. Stendhal died in Paris in 1842.
