Stefan Heym

Stefan Heym (1913–2001), born Hans Flieg in Chemnitz, was a German writer and journalist. He emigrated via Prague to the United States in 1933, where he wrote his first novels in English. During the Second World War, he served in the U.S. Army and took part in the Allied landings in Normandy. He returned to Europe in 1952 and subsequently lived in East Germany. His novels, essays, and articles critically examined German history and political conditions. His best-known works include *Five Days in June*, *The King David Report*, *Schwarzenberg*, and *Ahasver*. A prominent and outspoken journalist, he became internationally known and received several awards. In 1994, he entered the German Bundestag for the PDS and became its senior president. He died in Israel in 2001 while on a trip.
