Stanley Cavell

Stanley Cavell (1926–2018) was an American philosopher. From 1963 until his retirement in 1997, he taught at Harvard University as Professor of Aesthetics and the General Theory of Value; he later held the title of Walter M. Cabot Professor Emeritus. Cavell worked at the intersection of philosophy, literature, and culture. His subjects included Heidegger and Wittgenstein, Shakespeare, film comedies and melodramas, and American transcendentalism, particularly Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. He received honorary doctorates from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Strasbourg.
