Sophokles

Author · 26 books

Sophocles (497/496–406/405 BC) was a Greek tragedian of classical antiquity. He was born in Colonus near Athens and also took part in the city’s political and cultural life. Of the approximately 120 dramas attributed to him, only seven survive in complete form, including Oedipus Rex, Antigone, Electra, and Philoctetes. Alongside Aeschylus and Euripides, he is regarded as one of the major poets of Greek tragedy. He is credited with important theatrical innovations, including the introduction of a third actor and the expansion of the chorus from twelve to fifteen members.
