Slavoj Žižek (born 21 March 1949 in Ljubljana) is a Slovenian philosopher, cultural critic and psychoanalyst. He studied philosophy and sociology at the University of Ljubljana and psychoanalysis at Paris VIII University. Žižek has taught at institutions including the University of Ljubljana, the European Graduate School and Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities in London, and has held visiting professorships at several US universities. His work connects Lacanian psychoanalysis with Hegel, Marx, political theory and popular culture. His first book in English, “The Sublime Object of Ideology,” was published in 1989.
