Shirley Jackson (1916–1965) was an American writer. After studying, she worked for The New Yorker, which published her short story “The Lottery” in 1948 and made her famous almost overnight. Her fiction, comprising novels and short stories, is chiefly associated with the horror genre. Her best-known books include The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, both of which have been adapted for film several times. Jackson also wrote witty and perceptive accounts of her family life.
