Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (1814–1873) was an Irish writer. After studying law, he increasingly turned to journalism and edited several newspapers. He began publishing stories and novels in 1838. He became known chiefly for his ghost stories and tales of horror, which combine supernatural elements with psychological tension. His novella “Carmilla” is regarded as an early and influential work of vampire literature and influenced, among others, Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”.
