Sebastião Salgado was born in 1944 in Aimorés, Brazil. After studying in São Paulo and Paris and initially pursuing a career as an economist, he turned to photography. From 1973 onward, he worked in Paris and was associated with the agencies Sygma, Gamma, and Magnum Photos. In 1994, he and his wife, Lélia Wanick Salgado, founded Amazonas Images, which exclusively represents his work. His best-known photobooks include Other Americas (1986), Workers (1993), Terra (1997), Migrations (2000), Africa (2007), Genesis (2013), and Amazônia (2021). In 2019, he received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.
