Salim Alafenisch, born in 1948 in the Negev Desert to a Bedouin sheikh, is a German writer. Until the age of fourteen, he tended his father’s camels; he then attended secondary school in Nazareth. After a year in London, he studied ethnology, sociology and psychology at Heidelberg University. His books draw on the tradition of Oriental storytelling, and he traditionally tells his stories freely rather than reading them aloud.
