Born in 1942, Ruth White grew up in the coal-mining region of southwestern Virginia. She worked for many years as a teacher and school librarian. Her children’s and young adult books received several honors: *When the Moon Comes from the Mountains* received a Newbery Honor, and *Dark Shine* was named an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. *The Lily Pond*, *Dark Shine*, and *Tadpole* were also selected by *School Library Journal* as among the best books of the year.
