Ronald Searle

Ronald Searle (1920–2011) was an English cartoonist and illustrator. Born in Cambridge, he left school at the age of 15 and initially worked as an office boy while attending evening art classes. During the Second World War, he was held as a prisoner of war in Japanese captivity and took part in the construction of the Bridge on the River Kwai; he continued drawing there. After the war, he became particularly known for his biting drawings of the girls of St Trinian’s. In 2010, he placed around 2,000 drawings on permanent loan with the Wilhelm Busch Museum in Hanover.
