Roger Garaudy

Roger Garaudy (1913–2012) was a French philosopher, politician, and author. He studied philosophy in Paris and received a doctorate from the Sorbonne in 1953; in 1956 he completed a second doctorate in Moscow. A member of the French Communist Party from 1933, he served in the constituent assemblies in 1945 and 1946 and was a member of the National Assembly from 1946 to 1951 and again from 1956 to 1958, serving as its vice president during the latter period. He taught philosophy and art history at the University of Poitiers and directed the Centre d’Études et de Recherches Marxistes in Paris. Garaudy published more than 60 books, including “Marxism in the 20th Century,” which were translated into numerous languages.
