Born in 1959, Robert Twigger studied philosophy at Oxford and became known as a writer of travel and adventure literature. His first book, *Angry White Pyjamas*, recounts a three-year stay in Japan and the study of a martial art; it won the William Hill Sportsbook Award and the Somerset Maugham Award. In *Voyageur*, he described a 4,828-kilometre journey through northern Canada in a birch-bark canoe he built himself, following the route of Alexander MacKenzie. In 2010, he crossed the Libyan Desert and Egypt’s Great Sand Sea on foot.
