Dr. Robert Hofrichter (born 1957) is an Austrian zoologist and biologist who worked as a marine biologist, journalist, author, conservationist, and nature photographer. He wrote numerous books, including an internationally successful field guide to fungi. Together with Johannes Höflich, he produced the WDR series *Bedrohte Paradiese* (Threatened Paradises). During dives around the Galápagos Islands, Hofrichter studied the behavior of seals and became involved in the protection of the Mediterranean and its native monk seal. According to publisher biographies, his interest in the underground world and fungi began in childhood.
