Robert Gerwarth, born in 1976, studied history in Berlin and received his doctorate from Oxford. His academic positions included appointments at Harvard and Princeton. He taught modern history at University College Dublin and was the founding director of its Centre for War Studies. Gerwarth is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a member of the Royal Irish Academy. His publications include The Bismarck Myth: The German and the Iron Chancellor (2007), which received the Fraenkel Prize, Reinhard Heydrich: A Biography (2011), and The Vanquished: Why the First World War Failed to End (2017). In 2020, he received the Reimar Lüst Prize for International Science Communication from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
