Richard Flanagan, born in Tasmania in 1961, is an Australian writer. His novel *Gould’s Book of Fish* brought him international recognition in 2002 and won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. He received the Man Booker Prize for *The Narrow Road to the Deep North*. Flanagan also wrote and directed the film adaptation of his novel *The Sound of One Hand Clapping*, which was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 1998 Berlin International Film Festival. He was also one of the screenwriters of Baz Luhrmann’s film *Australia*.
