Rex Stout (1886–1975) was an American writer best known for his crime novels and stories featuring the overweight private detective Nero Wolfe. Between 1933 and 1975, he published 33 novels in the series as well as numerous short stories. Before writing his first Nero Wolfe novel, Stout had worked successfully as a businessman. He also advocated the protection of individual civil liberties and served for many years as chairman of an American writers’ association.
