Renate Welsh was born in Vienna in 1937. During her school years, she spent a year in Portland, Oregon, as an exchange student. After studying English, Spanish and political science, she worked as a freelance translator. From 1970 onward, she published children’s and young adult books as well as novels. Her best-known works include “Das Vamperl,” “Dieda oder Das fremde Kind,” “Johanna,” “Liebe Schwester” and “Großmutters Schuhe.” Her work received numerous honors, including the German Youth Literature Prize, the Austrian State Prize for Children’s and Young Adult Literature, the Austrian Recognition Prize and, in 2016, the City of Vienna Prize. In 1992, she was also awarded the professional title of Professor.
