Ranulph Fiennes (born in 1944 in Windsor, England) is a British explorer and author who holds several endurance records. He is regarded as the first person to reach both the North and South Poles overland. Before leading expeditions, he served in the private army of the Sultan of Oman. His numerous expeditions raised more than five million pounds sterling for charitable causes. In 1993, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
