Ralph Tegtmeier was born in Cairo. He studied comparative literature, English studies and Portuguese studies at the universities of Bonn and Lisbon, earning an M.A. He worked for many years as an interpreter and freelance translator and founded, among other ventures, a bookshop, a publishing house, a seminar-organisation company, and software and web-marketing businesses. In 1983, he published the academic monograph “Okkultismus und Erotik in der Literatur des Fin-de-siècle.” In 1995, he received the Kurd-Laßwitz Prize for the best science-fiction novel translation of the previous year, Ian McDonald’s “Schere schneidet Papier wickelt Stein.”
