Pietro Aretino (1492–1556) was an Italian writer. He was born in Arezzo and died in Venice. He became known for his sharp-tongued satirical writings. He also wrote plays, erotic sonnets, religious devotional works, and letters of considerable cultural and historical value. Aretino was regarded as a self-made figure from humble social circumstances who established his reputation through his writing.
