Petra Gabriel was born in Stuttgart and grew up in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance. She trained as a translator and hotel clerk and, after completing a traineeship, worked for around 15 years as an editor at the newspaper Südkurier. Her first novel, Zeit des Lavendels, was published in 2001; from 2004 onward, she worked as a freelance author. She published historical novels, crime fiction, books for young readers, short stories, and nonfiction. In 2015–16, she spent a year in Cuba and wrote a book about the experience. Her other publications include the biography Madame kam aus Amerika.
