Peter Urban

Peter Urban (1941–2013) was a German writer, translator, and editor. After studying Slavic studies, German, and history in Würzburg and Belgrade, he worked as an editor for Slavic literature at Suhrkamp Verlag from 1966 to 1968. In 1969, he was one of the co-founders of Verlag der Autoren, where he later served as managing director and editor. From 1989 onward, Urban worked as a freelance writer and translator from Slavic languages. He was particularly known for his translations of Anton Chekhov, and also translated works by Alexander Pushkin, Daniil Kharms, and Isaac Babel. His honors included the Translation Prize of the German Academy for Language and Literature and the Helmut M. Braem Translation Prize.
