Peter Stephan studied ancient history, Christian archaeology and church history in Freiburg im Breisgau and Heidelberg, as well as art history and classical archaeology in Würzburg and Freiburg. He earned his doctorate with a study of the Tiepolo frescoes in the Würzburg Residence and completed his habilitation with research on the spatial qualities of early modern façades. His fields of research include architectural history, iconography, garden art, and religious and princely modes of representation. He has also held several teaching appointments in Germany and abroad.
