Peter Steinbach

Born in Leipzig in 1938, Peter Steinbach initially trained as a photographer and spent six years at sea as a ship’s cook. He later worked in fields including theater and church broadcasting at Hessischer Rundfunk before becoming a screenwriter in 1976. He also wrote radio plays, stage plays, and children’s books. In 1985, he received the Grimme Award for the screenplays for “Heimat,” co-written with Edgar Reitz. He also wrote the screenplays for Joseph Vilsmaier’s film adaptation of “Herbstmilch” and the television film “Nächste Woche ist Frieden.” Steinbach taught screenwriting as a professor at the University of Hamburg for four years.
